Faith does not merely gaze at Jesus, but sees things as Jesus Himself sees them, with His own eyes: it is a participation in His way of seeing. Christ’s life open up new and inviting vistas for human experience. To enable us to know, accept, and follow Him, the Son of God took on our flesh. Far from divorcing us from reality, our faith in the Son of God made man in Jesus of Nazareth enables us to grasp reality’s deepest meaning, a new way of seeing opens up. Seeing then becomes a form of following Christ, and faith appears as a process of gazing, in which our eyes grow accustomed to peering into the depths.

It is this man, born from the womb of a young woman, who grew up like everyone else, and died; He decided to die in order to save those for whom He so often expressed his feeling of pity, “And he had pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd.” If God became man, this man is the supreme object of love.
