Benedict XVI, Humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord

The Pope Emeritus died on the morning of December 31 at 9:34 a.m. We repropose here his inaugural homily and his last General Audience after his resignation in 2013.

"With sorrow I inform that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 a.m. in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican," reported the Holy See's Press Office director, Matteo Bruni, also announcing that from the morning of Monday, January 2, Joseph Ratzinger's body will be in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican for the faithful to bid farewell.

"Going along with the desire of the Pope Emeritus, his funeral will be held under the sign of simplicity. They will be solemn but sober," the Vatican spokesman said. "The explicit request on the part of the Pope Emeritus is that everything be under the banner of simplicity, regarding the funeral, the rites, the gestures of this time of sorrow."
