Beacons of Hope

Both are places where humanity cries out for help. Both are places were Christ dwells. Both are places where hope is given to all who draw near...

There are two buildings in Sioux Falls, referred to as Beacon’s of Hope: a homeless shelter and the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Both are places where humanity cries out for help. Both are places were Christ dwells. Both are places where hope is given to all who draw near.

Traversing downtown, the Way of the Cross began at the Homeless shelter and concluded by ascending to the Cathedral on the hill. We encountered various people, but the most surprising was the story of “The Hanging of an innocent man.” This man’s life was etched on the historical plaque we met along the way. A fitting sign to help us reflect on our destination and the crucifixion: the hanging of the only truly innocent man.

As we approached the crucifix lying in the sanctuary after Good Friday liturgy, I was aware that the buildings, each in their unique way, really were Beacon’s of Hope for humanity. I was more aware that having encountered the Innocent Man, we are all called to be Beacon’s of Hope: Places where humanity cries out for help; places where Christ dwells; places where hope is given to all who draw near.
