Julián Carrón’s message at the conclusion of the Student Youth Easter Triduum. Rimini, March 30, 2013

Dear friends,

I often think of you, tangled up in your changing states of mind and your reactions. I am filled with an immense tenderness toward each one of you, and I ask myself: who knows how each of them will manage, without ending up confused and throwing in the towel?

I am encouraged when I think of how amazed you are when you discover, time after time, the emergence in yourselves—in the midst of all the changing moods that none of you can avoid—of the desire for happiness, that constant drive for fulfillment that reaches toward a limitless horizon, beyond all appearances. Everything changes, except for this. What a victory over the confusion that no one, ourselves included, can prevent!

And it makes me think: if they are loyal to that desire, that drive—that “dominant idea” of Leopardian memory, “terrible but precious gift of heaven, […] like a tower in an empty field, you stand alone, gigantic, in my thinking,” through all of the fluctuations—then no confusion will stop it.

“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit himself?” What passion for each one of us overflows from Jesus’ words!

My wish for you is that you will never stop at the appearance of things, and that you will tirelessly follow that constant drive, which is your greatest ally in the adventure of life.

Christ became man; He died and rose so that He could remain beside us in history and sustain this ally of ours.
